A root canal treatment offers pain relief from your teeth and gums. Here are some reasons why you may need a root canal:
- A strong toothache, especially one that is deep
- An untreated cavity that has spread deeper within your tooth
- A broken or damaged tooth that has a possibility of deeper damage and decay
- A tooth that has gone through extensive work
What is Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal treatment is typically recommended when the core of your tooth (also called the "pulp") is inflamed and/or infected. If the pulp is infected and left untreated, it can cause more severe and permanent issues, such as tooth loss, pain, or an abscess. Root canal treatment is a great way to help prevent the need for teeth extraction, dentures, or implants.
Although root canal treatments can relieve pain and issues that are deep in your teeth, daily brushing and flossing should be maintained to minimize the need for further treatment and the risk of severe conditions.
What to expect during a root canal treatment at Alliston Village Dental:
First, to perform the treatment, the damaged areas of the tooth are removed. After removal, the inside of the tooth is disinfected and filled with a rubber-like material. The pulp chamber is also filled with cotton and the opening is sealed with a temporary filling. The next time you return, a core buildup will replace the temporary filling and the treatment is finished with a filling or crown on your tooth.
At Alliston Village Dental, we offer patients the choice of sedation and/or local anesthesia, which removes any feeling of pain during the treatment. A couple of visits back to our Alliston dental office may be necessary to ensure that your teeth are healthy and there is no remaining infection or irritation.
