Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also called "laughing gas" is a colourless and odourless gas that slows down the body's reaction time. While patients do not fall asleep, they are much more relaxed and suffer much less anxiety during dental treatments. Nitrous oxide is also the only sedation option that allows patients to drive safely after a procedure!
Nitrous oxide is popular among patients who suffer from dental anxiety, have sensitive teeth, and/or are afraid of needles, drills and loud noises.
Oral Moderate Sedation
In more severe cases of anxiety or when more extensive dental procedures are required, patients may opt for a deeper form of sedation. In combination with nitrous oxide, a medication is administered prior to the procedure. While patients still do not fall asleep, they are typically even more relaxed than with laughing gas alone, and many times have little to no recollection of the appointment afterwards.
As time is required for the medication to wear off after the appointment, patients will require a companion to bring them home and monitor their recovery.
Here are a few other tips to remain calm during or in preparation for your appointment:
- Talk to our Alliston Village Dental Team: let us know what makes you nervous and we will do everything we can to make your appointment easygoing.
- Listen to music during the appointment: calm music can help reduce stress and anxiety!
- Breathe slowly and deeply: deep breathing has also been shown to reduce stress.
